Understanding the Procedure

What Is Bypass Surgery (CABG)?

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting — known as CABG or bypass surgery — creates a new route for blood to reach the heart muscle when one or more coronary arteries are narrowed or blocked by fatty deposits.

When the heart’s blood supply is restricted, patients experience chest pain, breathlessness, and reduced capacity for even simple activity. Left untreated, blocked arteries lead to heart attack and permanent heart muscle damage. Bypass surgery restores full, healthy blood flow — and with it, a significantly improved quality of life.

Dr. Ved Prakash, Director of CTVS at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospitals, Greater Noida, specialises in all forms of bypass surgery — from routine multi-vessel CABG to complex redo operations for patients who have had prior surgery.

Indications for Surgery

Who Needs Bypass Surgery?

Bypass surgery is typically recommended for patients with:

  • Blockages in two or more major coronary arteries
  • Left main coronary artery disease — the most critical artery supplying the heart
  • Severe angina (chest pain) not responding to medication or stenting
  • Coronary anatomy not suitable for angioplasty (stenting)
  • Reduced heart function (low ejection fraction) caused by coronary disease
  • Diabetes with multi-vessel coronary disease — where CABG offers superior long-term outcomes versus stenting

Dr. Ved Prakash reviews every angiography report in full before recommending surgery, always assessing whether a less invasive alternative is appropriate first.

Surgical Options

Types of Bypass Surgery Performed

On-Pump CABG

Traditional Bypass

Performed with the heart temporarily stopped and supported by a heart-lung machine. This approach provides maximum precision for complex, multi-vessel disease involving difficult arterial anatomy.

Off-Pump CABG

Beating Heart Surgery

Bypass grafts are placed on the beating heart — no heart-lung machine used. Significantly reduces risk of stroke, kidney injury, and blood transfusion. Particularly beneficial for elderly patients and those with diabetes or kidney disease.

Minimally Invasive Bypass

MIDCAB

A smaller incision through the left side of the chest, avoiding full sternotomy. Suitable for selected single or double-vessel disease. Results in less pain, reduced bleeding risk, and faster return to activity.

Redo Bypass Surgery

Re-operation

For patients whose previous bypass grafts have narrowed or failed over time, requiring new grafting. A technically demanding procedure — Dr. Ved Prakash has performed multiple successful redo CABG cases across his career at Medanta and beyond.

Patient Journey

What to Expect: Before, During and After

STEP 01

Before Surgery

A complete pre-operative assessment is performed: angiography review, echocardiogram, lung function, blood tests, and anaesthesia fitness. Every patient meets Dr. Ved Prakash in full consultation — questions are answered and the plan is explained clearly.

STEP 02

During Surgery

The procedure takes 3–5 hours under general anaesthesia. A graft — typically the LIMA from the chest wall or the saphenous vein from the leg — is used to bypass each blocked artery and restore blood flow to the heart muscle.

STEP 03

After Surgery

Most patients spend 1–2 days in the cardiac ICU followed by 5–7 days in the ward. A detailed recovery plan is provided. Most patients return to light activity within 4–6 weeks and full normal activity within 3 months.

Why Patients Choose Dr. Ved Prakash for Bypass Surgery

Dr. Ved Prakash has performed bypass surgery across some of India’s most reputed institutions — including Medanta Hospital, Narayana Super Speciality Hospitals, and Sarvodaya Healthcare — over a career spanning more than 8 years. He now leads the CTVS programme at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospitals, Greater Noida as Director.

His approach is straightforward: choose the right technique for each patient’s anatomy, explain every step clearly, and prioritise long-term outcome over convenience. Patients consistently describe his communication style as calm, clear, and trustworthy — qualities that matter enormously when facing major heart surgery.

Patient Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Is bypass surgery the only option if I have a blocked artery?

Not necessarily. Angioplasty (stenting) is effective for certain blockages — particularly single-vessel disease with suitable anatomy. Dr. Ved Prakash reviews every angiogram individually and recommends bypass only when it offers a significantly better long-term outcome than stenting, based on the specific pattern and severity of the blockages.

How long does a bypass graft last?

Arterial grafts — particularly the left internal mammary artery (LIMA) — can remain open for 15–20 years or more. Vein grafts (saphenous) typically last 10–15 years. Post-surgery lifestyle modification, medication adherence, and regular follow-up significantly affect graft longevity.

Can elderly patients have bypass surgery safely?

Yes. Age alone is not a contraindication. Dr. Ved Prakash has operated on patients in their 70s and 80s. The decision is based on overall health, heart function, lung capacity, kidney function, and individual risk profile — all assessed thoroughly before surgery.

What is the success rate of bypass surgery?

For elective, planned CABG performed at an experienced centre, success rates exceed 98–99%. Emergency surgery and redo surgery carry slightly higher risk — this is discussed openly and honestly with every patient before proceeding.

How much does bypass surgery cost in Delhi NCR?

Cost depends on the number of grafts required, surgical technique (on-pump vs off-pump), and insurance or cashless coverage. Please contact the clinic directly at +91-9355255106 for an accurate estimate based on your specific reports and condition.
